I volunteered at Mangkang work camp in May for 13 days, though the period was short but the experience was positive and enriching. A unique feature of the work camp is living with the locals (our camp leader and landlady) in a local house instead of hostel. This allows us to experience the life and better understand the challenges the villages faced. It motivates us to do more for the community and allow us to make modification to our plans and ideas to better cater to the community.
In addition, there were many hands on experience. The most memorable experience was the planting of 10,000 mangrove seedlings. Though the process was taxing but it was fun and we know that these mangroves will directly benefit the community. We also did school visit to educate the children about the cause and impact of flooding.
Apart from community services, we also visited several families and interacted with them. The families were friendly and welcoming. Through the interaction it gives us a peak into their way of life and culture. I would strongly encourage anyone who believe in environmental conservation and empower the community to join Mangkang Work Camp.
